Open Doors: The Secret Life of Luxury Hotels
The Mediaset-owned network has taken delivery of the first two episodes of Open Doors: The Secret Life of Luxury Hotels – spotlighting the Royal York in Toronto and The Grace in Monte Carlo – and will receive the others over the course of 2013.
The production schedule is complicated because each episode looks behind the scenes during a marquee event at each hotel, says Media Monkey VP and senior producer Micol Marotti. The shoot at the Grace took place during last year’s Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix, for example.
Because of the staggered delivery, RIT is expected to air Open Doors as a series of one-offs. Other locations will include Raffles Hotel in Singapore, The Savoy in London and Park Plaza in New York.
The series does not have a Canadian broadcaster, partly because its globe-trotting premise does not fit well with the usual funding agencies, which tend to favor more domestic content, said Marotti. The Canucks have taken a “wait and see” approach, she said, and talks are continuing.
The series is going to Mipcom with Toronto’s Si Entertainment, whose slate also includes sketch comedy series The Ron James Show (35×30?), Property Virgins spin-off Buy Herself (14×30) and Media Monkey one-off Operation Oblivion.
The hour-long doc recounts the true story of 12 Chinese Canadians and the near-suicidal mission for which they volunteered in the Second World War, parachuting into the heart of the Pacific to fight the Japanese without any support or recognition from their government. It will air in Canada on the Omni station group.
